Barbra Streisand is a singer and actress. She first gained public success for her supporting role in the Broadway musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale.
Streisand's father died when she was just over a year old. Her relationship with her stepfather was turbulent growing up and her mother did not encourage Streisand to follow her dreams of pursuing a career in show business. She believed that Streisand was not attractive enough. Many speculate that it led to her lifelong insecurity about her appearance.
In her teens, Streisand became a nightclub singer. She shortened her first name from Barbara to Barbra when she first became successful as a singer. Her boyfriend at the time, Barry Dennen, helped her shape a club act. She first performed in a Manhattan gay bar in 1960. She was well received by this audience.
She singed a contract with Columbia Records in 1962 and recorded her first album, The Barbra Streisand Album, which won two Grammys in 1963. That same year Streisand also appeared on Broadway in the musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale. She began guest appearing on a number of television stations, and built more success doing specials for CBS, including My Name Is Barbra. This special is still praised by fans.
In the course of her career, Streisand has recorded over 60 albums. Her early music was considered classic renditions of theatre standards; in the late 1960s she began tackling contemporary rock standards, and found success in the pop and ballad-oriented genre. The 1970s highlighted her pop chart success with number-one hits like "the Way We Were," "Evergreen," and "Woman In Love." By the end of the 70s, Barbra was named the most successful female US singer.
More recently, Streisand released a holiday album entitled Christmas Memories. In 2003 she released The Movie Album, which features famous movie themes -- most are instrumental and accompanied by a symphony. Guilty Pleasures was released in 2005. It is a collaborative work with Barry Gib.
Streisand also had an extensive film career. In 1968 she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Lion in Winter, which she shared with Katharine Hepburn. In 1970 she starred in The Owl and the Pussycat, with a topless scene. She regretted the move and had the scene deleted. High Society magazine later published photos of her bare breast, and Streisand sued them. Streisand's most recent film appearance was on the big screen comedy, Meet the Fockers; she starred with Dustin Hoffman, Ben Stiller, and Robert DeNiro.
Streisand was married to Elliot Gould from 1963 until 1971; the couple had one son, Jason Gould. She also dated Pierre Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, in the early 70s. She had long-term relationships with producer Jon Peters, Andre Agassi, and married actor James Brolin in 1998.
