Caddyshack Be Back!
Bill Murray is a comedian, actor, producer and film director, best-known for his roles in Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, and Ghostbusters.
Murray was the fifth of nine children; his father was a lumber salesman. Three of his siblings are currently actors: John Murray, Joel Murray, and Brian Doyle-Murray.
Murray attended Regis University in Denver, Colorado and dropped out to pursue a career in comedy. He moved to Chicago and began studying and practicing improvisational comedy, which was perfect fit for his dry wit. He was consistently featured on The National Lampoon Radio Hour, which aired on over 600 radio stations between 1973 and 1975.
By 1975 Murray had landed his first television role on Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell, which only lasted one season. He became widely known when he joined the cast of newly-titled Saturday Night Live the following season, replacing Chevy Chase who had become a popular member of the cast. Initially, Murray was not well received by fans, and was delivered a lot of hate mail. After settling into the cast, Murray became more laid-back and was able to express his unique wit.
Murray's film career began in the late 1970s with the film Meatballs. Following was a string of box office hits including Caddyshack, Stripes, and Tootsie. Murray made a deal with Columbia Pictures to star is the highest-grossing film in 1984, Ghostbusters, which helped him finance his co-written film adaptation of The Razor's Edge. The Razor's Edge was released after Ghostbusters and flopped at the box-office. Upset about the failure, Murray took four years off from acting.
He returned to film in 1988 with Scrooged and Ghostbusters II in 1989. By the early 1990s, Murray began his directing career with Quick Change, What About Bob? in 1991 and Groundhog Day in 1993, all were subsequent box-office hits.
Murray's 2003 film Lost in Translation proved to be a a highlight of his film career. He stated in an DVD interview that it was his favorite appearance. He received a Golden Globe Award and a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor. Other successful films during this time included Charlie's Angles and Osmosis Jones. He also provided the voice for Garfield in Garfield: The Movie. He also had a successful dramatic role in Broken Flowers. After Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties in 2005 he announced that he would take a break from acting.
Murray married Margaret Kelly in 1980. Together they have two sons Homer (1982) and Luke (1985). He and Kelly divorced in 1994. He married Jennifer Butler in 1997 and had four children: Jackson (1993), Cal (1995), Cooper (1996), and Lincoln (2001). He and his brothers own the Caddy Shack restaurant chain, which are located near Jacksonville and Myrtle Beach. He enjoys golfing and often attends celebrity tournaments. He is a partner in St. Paul Saints independent minor-league team.
He currently splits his time between homes in Los Angeles, Charleston, SC, and upstate New York.
