Crystal grew up with a father in the music business, a homemaker mother, and three older brothers. His father died of a heart attack when Crystal was only 15. He had a love for baseball, a game her learned from his father, and dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player; he earned a baseball scholarship to Marshall University. He married Janice Goldfinger in 1970, and since had two daughters.
Crystal studied film under Marin Scorsese at New York University. Early on he had a few minor roles including the character "Jodie Dallas" on Soap. It wasn't until 1984 that he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live where he performed a parody of Fernando Lamas. He also made appearances on game shows such as The Hollywood Squares and The $20,000 Pyramid.
Crystal's career took off in the early 1980s with blockbuster film roles including When Harry Met Sally and City Slickers. He began hosting Comic Relief on HBO in 1986 with Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg; the show raised money for homeless men, women, and children. He also hosted the Academy Awards in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2000, and 2004.
Some of Crystals' most acclaimed work includes films Deconstructing Harry, Analyze This, and Analyze That.
