Chevy Chase is a actor, writer, and comedian best known as one of the original cast members for Saturday Night Live and his performances in the films Caddyshack and the National Lampoon movies.
Chevy was a nickname given to Chase during his childhood, and listed in the Social Register at an early age. When he was four-years-old, his parents divorced. He graduated valedictorian of his high school class. Chase attended Harvard University, but was expelled after one semester. Classmates tell stories of pranks that Chase performed; some became urban legends. Some stunts include taking a cow into his forth floor dormitory and a fake suicide. His early career aspiration was to become a doctor.
Chase was the original anchor for the Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live. Some of his recurring roles included making fun of Gerald Ford and his gag as the Landshark. He left the show in 1976 to pursue a film career. After leaving, he hosted the show eight times, but was banned in February 1997 due to verbal abuse of some cast members.
Chase's first film roles were Foul Play and Oh! Heavenly Dog. His more successful films, including Caddyshack, Modern Problems, and National Lampoon's Vacation, came in the 1980s. In 1986 he joined friends from the Saturday Night Live crew to produce Three Amigos!. During this time he was earning about $7 million per film.
Since the 1980s, Chase's career has tapered substantially. In 1993 he hosted a FOX network talk show The Chevy Chase Show. In 1996 he was the winner of the Harvard Lampoon's Lifetime Achievement Award. He regularly makes comments about President George W. Bush like, "This guy in office is an uneducated, real lying schmuck. . .and we still couldn't beat him with a bore like Kerry."
Chase runs five miles daily to stay in shape and has a phobia of snakes. | |
