Dave Chappelle is a comedian and actor; he is best-known as the star of Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central.
Dave Chappelle spent his childhood in Silver Spring, Maryland and Yellow Springs, Ohio, where his father taught voice and music at Antioch College. His mother, Yvonne Seon, was a Unitarian minister. His parents divorced and he moved with his mother to Washington, D.C. He spent his summers in Ohio with his father.
Chappelle's comedy began at Duke Ellington School of he Arts when he was 14 years old. He was well received in clubs on the East Coast. In 1993, he appeared on HBO's Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam, where he caught the eye of Whoopi Goldberg; at age 20 he was the youngest comic to have a featured spot on Comic Relief VI. His first film role was Robin Hood: Men in Tights. He appeared in The Nutty Professor as a comedian, Con Air, Blue Streak, and Half Baked. Chappelle is credited for writing Half Baked, a movie in which the her must choose between smoking pot and the girl he loves.
Chappelle's Show debuted on Comedy Central in 2003 and quickly gained popularity, playing heavily on racial stereotypes around the African American culture. It became one of the highest rated shows on cable. Chappelle has done two parody music videos, including to the R. Kelly Song "Feeling on you Booty," which Chappelle parodied in "Piss On You."
In 2005, during the third season of the show, Chappelle took off to South Africa for two weeks; he was unhappy with the direction of his show. He returned to the United States in December 2005, but announced that he would not be returning to the show. Comedy Central released the un-aired pieces from the third season in four half-hour episodes.
