Elton John is one of the most successful solo British artists in music history with a career that spans over four decades. He is a singer, composer, and pianist, known for his on-stage showmanship.

Elton John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, was raised in Pinner, England, primarily by his mother and other female relatives. His parents divorced when he was 15. He started playing the piano when he was four years old, and as a child, was able to play by ear any song her heard.

In the early 1960s, John formed a "Bluesology" band with his friends. He later joined Dick James's DJM Records as a staff songwriter in 1968. He could write a batch of lyrics in under an hour. In 1969, John released his first album, Empty Sky for DJM. However, the album failed in the record buying market.

Success came to John in 1970 when he released his second self-titled album. The single "Your Song" slowly climbed to the top ten of US charts. In 1973, John started his own record label, Rocket Records, and released Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, shortly after. This album included hits "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel." By 1976, John saw success when he collaborated with Kiki Dee in the duet "Don't Go Breaking My Heart," which instantly hit number 1 on the charts. His flamboyant stage presence made his concert performances famous. Also in 1976, John stated in an interview with Rolling Stone that he was bisexual.

During the 1980s, John was able to return to the charts with songs such as "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "I'm Still Standing," and a recording of "Candle in the Wind," a tribute to Marilyn Monroe.

John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

After the death of Princess Diana of Wales in September 1997, John altered the lyrics of "Candle in the Wind," which her performed at her funeral in Westminster Abbey. This recorded version became the fastest selling single of all time; it sold over 30 million copies around the world.

John enjoys performing with other artists such as Billy Joel and Eminem. He released a single featuring 2Pac "Ghetto Gospel" in 2005. In May 2006, the Pet Shop Boys released their album Fundamental, which will contain a limited edition "In private," which is a new version of the Dusty Springfield single and a duet with John.

John has been involved in a numerous amount of filmwork. He wrote the soundtrack for the movie Friends in 1971. And, in 1994, he wrote the songs for Disney's The Lion King, along with Tim Rice. He wrote the score for The Muse. Many of his songs appear on various movie soundtracks.

John has lived with his partner, David Furnish, a former advertising executive, since the early 1990s. The two were united in a civil union on December 21, 2005. He supports AIDS charities, raising large sums of money with his public profile to raise awareness. He founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992. He donated two red Yamaha pianos that he used in his Los Vegas show to be auctioned on eBay to raise public awareness and funds for the foundation.

John has faught addictions to cocaine. John supported Michael Jackson through his addiction to painkillers; Jackson in return dedicated the 1997 album Blood on the Dance Floor to him. John has one of the largest private photography collections in the world.
