Halle Berry is best known for her Oscar-winning performance in Monster's Ball. She is the first African-American to ever win a Best Actress Oscar.
Berry is the daughter of Judith Ann Hawkins, an English ancestry caucasian and father, Jerome J. Berry, who is African American. When she was four years old, her parent divorced. She way primarily raised by her mother, a psychiatric ward nurse. She has one older sister, Heidi Berry. During High School, she was a cheerleader, honor society member, class president, and prom queen. She worked in the children's department of Higbee's Department Store.
Berry's career began as in modeling. She entered several beauty contests, including Miss Ohio USA, Miss Teen All American, Miss USA, and Miss World. In the late 80s she moved to Chicago to pursue modeling further. While there, she tried her luck at acting. She auditioned for a role in Charlie's Angles. She did not get the role, but impressed producer Aaron Spelling.
Her breakthrough came in the Spike Lee feature film, Jungle Fever, where she played a drug addict. Strictly Business provided her with her first starring role. Fans know her for her role in the film, based upon the comic book, X-Men (2000). She starred in Gothika, a 2003 thriller.
When she entered acting, she swore she would never play a nude role. However, in the film Swordfish she had a thirty-second topless scene. And in Monster's Ball she had a nude sexual scene. The appearance won her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 2002.
In 1992, Berry was married to baseball star David Justice. They were divorced in 1996. She married Eric Benet in 2001, but divorced him in 2005. Both marriages reportedly ended as a result of infidelity. Berry has said that she will never marry again. She does not have any children of her own, but has a close relationship with her step-daughter, India, from her marriage with Benet. Berry was recently involved with Rey-Phillip Santos. She currently lives with boyfriend Michael Ealy. | |
