Jay Leno is seen nightly on the NBC television network late-night television show, The Tonight Show, with a large chin, big smile and friendly demeanor.
Always most comfortable as an entertainer, young Leno worked as a stand-up comedian in clubs and late night programs. He was eventually noticed by NBC television network executives and introduced to his current position by filling in for guest host Joan Rivers on The Tonight Show, then hosted by Johnny Carson.
Launched in 1954, The Tonight Show was originally called Tonight! and was hosted by Steve Allen, with his regular side-kick Ernie Kovacs. Steve Allen established many of the standards of late night television, introducing the desk and couch and an emphasis on conversations with guests.
In 1957, Jack Paar took over as host and the show was renamed The Jack Paar Tonight Show. It ran for almost five years. In 1962, Johnny Carson became the host of The Tonight Show. For thirty years, Carson was the undisputed king of late night television in the USA. In 1986, Jay Leno became a frequent guest host on The Tonight Show, and he became the exclusive guest host in the fall of 1987.
In May 1992, Johnny Carson announced his retirement as host of The Tonight Show. David Letterman hoped to replace him, as Carson had been a mentor to Letterman and he had served as guest host of the show 51 times. But executives at NBC chose Leno to replace Carson. It was then that Letterman moved from NBC to CBS to host the new Late Show With David Letterman.
Leno is known in the automotive world for his extensive collection of antique cars and his spare time is spent collecting automobiles and motorcycles. He writes columns for the magazine Popular Mechanics where he discusses his restoration and mechanical crafts.
In an interview with CNN host Anderson Cooper on The Tonight Show on August 1, 2007, Leno confirmed that he is dyslexic.
Leno has announced his plans to retire from the show in 2009. He will be replaced by Late Night host Conan O'Brien.
