Canadian citizen Jim Carrey is a movie actor known for his performances in outlandish comedies. His rubber-faced, slapstick style has earned him great popularity and made him one of Hollywood's best paid stars.

Carrey grew up in the Toronto suburb of Newmarket, Ontario. From an early age, Carrey was practicing his comedy. He applied to The Carol Burnett Show at the age of ten, and his high school teacher's made time for him during school to perform stand-up for his classmates.

Carrey began performing in comedy clubs, after he dropped out of high school, impersonating celebrities such as Jimmy Stewart. He was noticed by Rodney Dangerfield while working in The Comedy Store (a comedy club in West Hollywood). He then began touring with Dangerfield. After occasional work in television and a few movie performances, he became part of the sketch for TV show In Living Color. His unique and manic behavior became well known by the American audience. This success gave him the momentum to establish himself as a comical figure on the big screen.

Carrey became a major movie star with his work in Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994), followed by Dumb & Dumber (1994).

His performance in The Cable Guy (1996) earned him twenty million dollars -- record pay for a comedic actor. But due to the movie's dark mood, it failed in the box office. His appearances in successful comedies afterward allowed for a quick rebound. He continues to appear in comedies, but has recently taken on some more dramatic roles, earning him praise from critics. His performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) has proven his success in the dramatic film genre.

Carrey has been married and divorced twice, first to Melissa Womer and then to Lauren Holly. He has one daughter, Jane, from his first marriage.
