John Grisham is an American author known for dramatic fiction about the legal profession. He is a retired lawyer and former politician.

Grisham was raised Southern Baptist and is the second eldest of four siblings. As a child, Grisham loved John Steinbeck because of his clarity. After graduation from University of Mississippi School of Law in 1981, he practiced criminal and civil law for almost 10 years. A Time to Kill was finished three years later in 1987. The book was initially rejected by many publishers, and sold only 5,000 copies. As soon as A Time To Kill was complete, Grisham began his second, The Firm, which became the best-selling novel of 1991. Since, he has published at least one book per year.

He was consider by Publisher's Weekly, "the bestselling novelist of the 90s," selling close to 70,000,000 books. The Pelican Brief alone sold over 11 million copies, which made it the best selling novel of the decade.
