Julianne Moore is an Oscar-nominated actress who starred in 24 films during the Nineties alone. According to director Andre Gregory she possesses "the sensuality and urgency of a young Joan Crawford, but with more depth, more condradictions."
Moore grew up as an "army brat" with a younger sister and brother. Her father was a military judge who moved the family to twenty-three places across the U.S. and Germany. After graduation from the School of Fine Arts at Boston University, Moore moved to New York City, found a job as a waitress, and began an acting career. She was soon cast in the dual roles of Frannie and Sabrina Hughes on soap opera, As the World Turns. She played these roles from 1985 until 1988.
She began her film career in the early 1990s in films including The Hand That Rocks that the Cradle and The Fugitive. After Short Cuts in 1993, she established critical recognition, and began acting in high-profile films: Nine Months and 1997's The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
Oscar recognition found her in the early 2000s with her roles in Boogie Nights ("Best Supporting Actress"), The End of the Affair ("Best Actress" nomination) and her two 2002 films Far From Heaven ("Best Actress") and The Hours ("Best Supporting Actress" nomination). She also appeared in Hannibal, The Forgotten, and follow-up to Boogie Nights, Maganolia.
Moore is on her third marriage. She was first married to Sundar Chakravarthey from 1983 until 1985, then to John Gould Rubin from 1986 until 1995. She married film director Bart Freundlich in August 2003. She and Freudlich have two children: Caleb (1997) and Liv Helen (2002).
Moore is known for her democratic political philosophies: she is a pro-choice activist, and donated money to John Kerry's presidential campaign.
Her most recent film, Freedomland, opened in theaters in February 2006 and received mixed reviews. She announced that she would make a Broadway debut in the world premiere of David Hare's play The Vertical Hour. The play will open Novemeber 30, 2006.
