Katie Holmes is best-known for her role Josephine or "Joey" on the 1998 the television drama show Dawson's Creek.

Holmes was born the youngest of five children; she has three sisters and one son. Her father, Martin Joseph Holmes, Sr. was a divorce attorney. She attended was raised Roman Catholic, and attended Christ the King Church and parochial schools in Toledo, including an all-female high school (she was a 4.0 student and scored a 1310 on her SATs). During high school, she was involved in theater and performance and played in several school musicals.

She began her modeling career at fourteen when Margaret O'Brien, her modeling teacher, took her to New York City for a talent expo where she performed a monologue for To Kill a Mockingbird. She found an agent and began promoting her audition tape. She was soon cast into a small role in film Libbits Casey, which starred Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver.

When Holmes read the part for the television series, Dawson's Creek, she was instantly intrigued. She landed the part of Joey Potter and became the on-again-off-again love interest for the main character Dawson who was played by James Van Der Beek. She also became famous from roles such as The Ice Storm in 1997, Go in 1999, and Wonder Boys in 2000 with Michael Douglass.

Holmes has hosted Saturday Night Live, has been named by FHM magazine as one of the sexiest women in the world, and was named one of People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People" in May of 2003. Teen People named her one of the "25 Hottest Stars Under 25" in June 2003. Holmes has also found success in a modeling career with large American clothing companies such as The Gap.

When Dawson's Creek ended in 2003, Holmes fame moved to a larger screen. In 2005 she starred in Batman Begins with Christian Bale. Also in 2005 a highly publicized partnership with actor Tom Cruise heightened her career. A proposal by Cruise from the Eiffel Tower and an announcement that they are expecting to have a child together piqued the media's attention
