Kevin Spacey is an American film and stage actor and London-based theatre director best known for roles in The Usual Suspects and American Beauty.
Spacey was raised with two older siblings, a sister and a brother. His father was often unemployed, causing the family to move often. Eventually, the family settled in California. Spacey attended Chatsworth High School, which was known for it's drama department. As a senior, he performed in a production of The Sound of Music. Spacey then attended the Juilliard School in New York City to study drama. His first professional appearance was in the New York Shakespeare Festival in Henry VI, part 1.
Spacey quickly developed a reputation as a character actor; he does particularly well in dark, quirky roles such as the criminal Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects, and the ego-driven district attorney in A Time to Kill, and the serial killer in Se7en. His role as a depressed father who falls in love with a teenage girl in American Beauty earned him wide praise. Pay It Forward, K-Pax, and Beyond the Sea, were less critically acclaimed than his darker films.
In 1997 he founded Trigger Street Productions Inc. to begin producing entertainment across various media.
His role in Richard II became his title performance. London South Bank University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his role. Spacey will appear as Lex Luthor in Superman Returns.
A British newspaper, The Daily Mirror, reported in a program dedicated to fighting homophobia, that Spacey is among a list of famous gay people. The report was taken back by the program's leader, listing it as a "mistake." When asked about his sexuality, rather gay or bisexual, he responds "My sexuality should not matter."
Spacey is a skilled mimic, and known for his impersonations of celebrities like Johnny Carson and Katharine Hepburn.
