Martin Scorsese is a film director who is known for his often controversial approaches in portraying sex and violence on film. He won an Academy Award in 2007 for Best Director for The Departed (2006). Previously, he had been nominated six times.
Scorsese had a Roman Catholic upbringing, and wanted to become a priest. His father, Luciano Scorsese worked in the New York garment district. Scorsese was not a healthy child, and spent a lot of time at home watching the happenings below from his bedroom window. His favorite late-childhood pastime was going to the movies.
Scorsese began his career during film school making short films, including The Big Shave (1967). His first full-length film was Who's That Knocking at My Door (1967) with classmate Harvey Keitel.
After film school, Scorsese returned to New York City to work on a documentary in Little Italy titled Italianamerican (1974), based upon the lives of his parents and the Italian-American culture. Two years later, his 1976 film Taxi Driver, starring Robert DeNiro and Jodie Foster, grabbed the interest of the film industry.
In the 1980s Scorsese quit his cocaine addiction, encouraged by Robert DeNiro, to film Raging Bull (1980). The film was viewed as a masterpiece, and received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor (Robert DeNiro), and Best Director. In 1988 he adapted Nikos Kazantzakis book, The last Temptation of Christ for the big screen and Scorsese was nominated for Best Director.
Also in the 1980's Scorsese produced Michael Jackson's Bad music video, as well as The King of Comedy (1983), After Hours (1985), and The Color of Money (1986).
Goodfellas (1990) secured Scorsese's place as a great movie director. For this film, Scorsese earned his third Best Director nomination.
Gang's of New York was released in 2002. This film had a production budget of over $100 million; Scorsese's largest budgeted film to date. The film earned ten Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Director. His film The Aviator, which was released in December 2004, won three Golden Globe awards, including Best Picture - Drama.
It was not until 2007 that Scorsese took home an Oscar for Best Director. It was for his 2006 film, The Departed, starring Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Scorsese is working on a documentary about the Rolling Stones due for release in 2007.

The Academy Award for best motion picture of 2006 will be presented on Sunday, February 25 2007 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California. And the nominees are: Babel (directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu), The Departed (directed by Martin Scorsese), Letters from Iwo Jima (directed by Clint Eastwood), Little Miss Sunshine (directed by Jonathan Dayton) and The Queen (directed by Stephen Frears).
