Fighting to Cure Parkinson's Disease!
Michael J. Fox is best-known for his roles as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future movie trilogy and Alex in the TV sitcom Family Ties.
Fox, born Michael Andrew Fox, is an American citizen who was born in Canada and thus has dual citizenship. He grew up in various Canadian cities including North Bay, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia because his father was in the armed forces.
Fox's ambitions for acting led him to Los Angeles. It proved to be a difficult time, as he barely earned a living on guest roles. He got his big break when he auditioned for the smart alek role of Alex Keaton on Family Ties. By 1984 the TV show was a Thursday evening hit, eventually moving to Sunday nights with its top television rankings. Fox won three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for his role on the sitcom.
Other notable roles include Back to the Future (1985), Back to the Future Part II (1989), Back to the Future Part III (1990), Teen Wolf (1985), For Love or Money (1993), Mars Attacks! (1996) and the television series Spin City (1996-2000). He announced his retirement from his lead role in Spin City in 2000 because of his struggle with Parkinson's disease.
He is the voice of the title character in the Stuart Little movies, which are based upon the E.B. White book. More recent appearances were guest star roles in the television comedy Scrubs, as a doctor with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Fox suffers from Parkinson's disease, which was diagnosed in 1991. He was filming the movie Doc Hollywood when he noticed tremors in the pinky finger of his left hand. He went public with his story in 1998, and in 2002 released the autobiography Lucky Man: A Memoir documenting his experiences with the disease.
Fox is a vocal advocate of Parkinson's research, including stem cell research, and launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. In 2005 he opened the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Kentucky as a tribute to Muhammad Ali, who also suffers from Parkinson's disease.
In October 2006, Fox was featured in a campaign ad for Democratic senate candidate Claire McCaskill in Missouri, in which he encouraged voters to choose McCaskill because she supports stem cell research. While he speaks in the ad, he is shown shaking uncontrollably due to the disease. On October 25, 2006, radio show host Rush Limbaugh accused Fox of exaggerating his symptoms: "He is moving all around and shaking, and it is purely an act," he told listeners of his syndicated radio program, which reaches 10 million people. "This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn't take his medication or he's acting." Radio show host Sean Hannity then chimed in, saying that "Michael J. Fox admits now that he stopped taking his medication prior to testifying before Congress. You have a right to speak up, but he also has a right to be criticized."
Fox has been married to actress Tracy Pollan since 1988. They have four children: Sam (1989), twins Aquinnah and Schuyler (1994), and Esme (2001).
