Paul Simon is an American singer and songwriter, known for his work with Art Garfunkel. The duo created the legendary rock band, "Simon and Garfunkel."
Simon grew up in New York and began a musical career in high school when he began a duo that performed at school dances with his friend Art Garfunkel. The called themselves "Tom and Jerry." They recorded "Hey, Schoolgirl" on Big Records, which made it to forty-nine on pop charts. Simon carried his love for music throughout college and between 1957 and 1964 he released over thirty songs. He also produced many single for other acts during this period, including The Vels, Ritchie Cordell, and Jay Walker.
In 1964, Simon and Gerfunkel auditioned with Columbia records and produced an album titled "Simon and Garfunkel." Of the twelve songs on the album, five of them were written by Simon. Together the duo recorded several successful albums such as Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, Bookends, and Bridge Over Troubled Water. After Bridge over Troubled Water, Simon began pursuing solo projects. The duo would continue to reunite for shows like the concert in Central Park and the album Think Too Much. In 2003 they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. They toured together that year under the title "Old Friends."
Simon's solo work came after the 1970 split between he and Garfunkel. He released Paul Simon (1972) There Goes Rhymin' Simon, (1973) and Still Crazy After All These Years. It wasn't until 1986 that he released the popular Graceland, which earned him a Grammy.
Simon has done some acting. He played the role of music producer, Tony Lacey in the Woody Allen film, Annie Hall. He also wrote and starred in One Trick Pony, and appeared on The Muppet Show.
Simon was married Peggy Harper in 1969; they had a son in 1972 and were divorced in 1975. His second marriage was to Carrie Fisher in 1983 for only 11 months. He married his current wife, Edie Brickell in 1992. Together, Simon and Brickell have three children, Adrian, Loulou, and Gabriel.
Simon's latest album, Surprise, was released May 9, 2006.
