Robert Redford is a movie actor, director, and producer. He is also known as a businessman and philanthropist.

Robert Redford graduated from high school in Los Angeles, California from where he received a baseball scholarship in 1955. He was a pitcher on the University of Colorado baseball team. His mother died when Redford was only 18, which fueled an adolescent drinking him and caused him to loose his scholarship. Later, he attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn to study painting. Redford also studied theatrical design at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Redford married Lola Van Wagenen in September, 1958. The couple had four children, and divorced in 1985. They lost one of their children from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The other three children are Shauna Redford, Amy Redford, and James Redford.

Some of Redford's most famous movie roles include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), Out of Africa (1985) and The Great Gatsby (1974). He also directed the films Ordinary People (1980), The Horse Whisperer (1998) and A River Runs Through It (1992). Redford also produced Ordinary People, for which he won an Academy Award for Directing. He is one of very few people who are primarily known as actors, but won an Academy Award for Best Director.

Redford owns the Sundance Resort in Sundance, Utah at the base of Mount Timpanogos. He bought the resort from the Stewart family in 1969, when it was called the Timphaven ski area. Redford founded the Sundance Film Festival -- the largest independent cinema festival in the US, which screens independent dramatic and documentary films. He also founded The Sundance Institute, Sundance Catalog and the Sundance Channel. Redford also owns a restaurant called Zoom in Park City, Utah.

Redford received honor from the Kennedy Center for his contributions to American culture in December, 2005. Redford had a long-term relationship with costume designer, Kathy O'Rear. More recently, he has been romantically involved with painter, Sibylle Szaggars.
