Blabby, Flabby and Totally Gay!Rosie O'Donnell is an actress, comedian and talk show host currently appearing on the daytime talk show The View with co-host Barbara Walters. A lesbian, O'Donnell is active in the gay rights movement.
O'Donnell's feud with real estate mogul Donald Trump, ended with Barbara Walters calling him "that poor pathetic man" at the start of The View. Despite rumors of Walters and O'Donnell fighting behind the scenes, the two united against Trump and his accusation that Walters called the comedienne a pig. O'Donnell added salt to the wound by reminding viewers of Trump's low-ratings for his show The Apprentice, while O'Donnell has brought ratings for The View to new heights. She told her audience, "The man is obsessed with me, and I'm happy to say, his show tanked."
O'Donnell was raised Irish Catholic. She began her career on the East Coast doing stand-up comedy work. Her first acting job was her role in sitcom Gimme a Break as "Maggie O'Brien." In the late 80's she hosted Stand-Up Spotlight, a VH1 stand-up comedy series, and gave her own sitcom, Stand by Your Man, a try in 1992. Also in the 1990's she starred in several comedy films including A League of Their Own, Another Stakeout and Sleepless in Seattle.
O'Donnell began hosting her own daytime television talk show in 1996. The Rosie O'Donnell Show quickly gained a wide audience. Her show hosted entertainers and highlighted charitable projects to increase donations to them.
O'Donnell began publishing the magazine Rosie in 2000. Written for women, covering common female concerns like depression, breast cancer, and parenting, the magazine soon failed for lack of advertising. Rosie ended her talk show in 2002, and returned to stand-up comedy. Before she left the show she announced that she is a lesbian.
In 2003 O'Donnell published the autobiographical book, Find Me. It documented her childhood and early adulthood, touching specifically on her relationship with a schizophrenic woman. The book was a New York Times Best Seller.
In the summer of 2006 she was hired by Barbara Walters to replace Meredith Vieira as a host of The View. The loquacious O'Donnell has already distinguished herself with trenchant observations such as "radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam." She has also described Oprah Winfrey as being gay but unwilling to admit it.
O'Donnell married Kelli Carpenter in San Francisco in 2004. She and Carpenter operate R. Family Vacations, which owns a cruise ship to carry gay and lesbian couples to the Bahamas. O'Donnell and her family have homes on the Hudson River, New York and in Florida. | |
