Salma Hayek is one of the most successful Latin American actresses in Hollywood. She is feminist and also works to increase awareness of violence against women and discrimination against immigrants.
Hayek was raised in a wealthy catholic family; her father was an oil company executive; her mother was an opera singer. As a child, Hayek had aspirations of becoming an Olympic gymnast. She left catholic school, Academy of Sacred Heart, due to behavioral problems. She then moved to Houston, Texas to live with her aunt until she was 17. She dropped out of college, where she was studying international relations in Mexico City, to pursue an a career in acting.
Hayek began her acting with telenovela (Mexican Soap Opera) at the age of 23 with her role in Teresa. In 1994 she starred in El Callejon de los Milagros (The Alley of Miracles); this film one more awards than any other in the history of Mexican Cinema.
She moved to Los Angeles, barely able to speak English in 1991, to study acting, ambitious for a career in Hollywood. The 1995 film Desperado, co-starring Antonio Banderas, gave her the opportunity she needed to dazzle American audiences. Films following Desperado include From Dusk Till Dawn, Wild Wild West, and Dogma.
The 2002 film Frida with Hayek as Frida Kahlo won her a Best Actress Academy Award nomination. In 2003 she appeared in final film of the Mariachi Trilogy, Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
Hayek was in a relationship with Edward Norton for four years (1999 - 2003). She also briefly dated Josh Lucas. In 2007 Hayek became engaged to businessman Francois-Henri Pinault. The couple is expecting their first child later this year.
