Canadian Rock Musician Fumbling Towards Ecstacy
Sarch McLachlan is a Canadian musician, singer and songwriter who is widely recognized for founding Lilith Fair -- a concert that showcased female musicians during the late 90s.
McLachlan started her own band, "The October Game," when she was only 17 years old. McLachlan soon signed a contract with Nettwerk, a Vancouver based independent recording label. She was signed to the network before having written a single song. Soon after, she moved to Vancouver to begin recording. There she recorded her first album, Touch, which was released in 1988.
McLachlan's 1991 album, Solace, spawned two hit singles "The Path of Thorns (terms)," and "Into the Fire." Solace was her mainstream breakthrough in Canada. Fumbling Towards Ecstasy was a smash hit in Canada; the album became her internation breakthrough as well. Surfacing was released in 1997 and debuted at the top of international charts amid the hype of Lilith Fair, which raised $7 million for charities and became the most successful all-female music festival in history. Surfacing is her best selling album to date. It is known for the emotional ballads that include "Building a Mystery", "Adia", and "I Will Remember You."
In 1997 she married her longtime drummer Ashwin Sood. During this time, after the Lilith Fair tour ended that summer, she took an extended period away from recording and touring. She gave birth to her daughterShe returned to public life to tour for her 2003 Afterglow release.
McLachlan's song "The Path of Thorns" was the 50 millionth song downloaded off of Apple's iTunes. World wide she has sold over 30 million albums. After her 2005 "Afterglow" tour, she has plans to settle down again and have another baby.
