Stephen King is famous for writing popular horror novels.
When King was only two years old, his father, Edwin King, left his family. He was raised by his mother, Ruth Pillsbury. He, his mother, and his adopted brother, lived a with very little money. They lived in Durham, Maine, Fort Wayne, Indiana and Stratford, Connecticut.
While in elementary school, King began writing stories about movies he had seen, and would sell them to his friends. His brother David helped him make copies using a mimeo machine, the machine used to copy David's self-published newspaper, Dave's Rag. Later, he found a collection of his father's books, mostly horror. He was instantly hooked on the genre.
During college, King wrote a column in the University newspaper, "King's Garbage Truck." He met his wife Tablitha at the school's library, where they both worked. He worked several jobs during this time, including industrial laundry. After graduation, he took a teaching job in Hampden, Maine teaching English. He wrote short stories to supplement his income. He also began some of his novels. During this period, he developed a drinking problem.
On June 19, while on a walk, he was hit by a Dodge van and thrown 14 feet into the air. He was rushed to the hospital that could not treat him, and flown to another. He suffered a collapsed lung, a broken leg in nine places, a broken right hip, four broken ribs, and a spine chipped in eight places. Three weeks later, King was released from the hospital. During his recovery, he worked on his memoir "On Writing," where he talks about his writing style and processes in depth. He explains that stories cannot be planned ahead of time, but must grow from a single seed. His philosophy for good writing is this: "Read four hours a day and write four hours a day. If you cannot find the time for that, you can't expect to become a good writer."
King has written six books under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. When the name was made public, he staged a funeral for the character. The novel, The Dark Half, was inspired by this incident.
King announced that he would stop writing in 2003. However, several books of his books have been published since. He writes a column for Entertainment Weekly, which appears on the back page every third week. In 2005, he signed with Marvel Comics to began writing The Dark Tower series, which will be illustrated by Jae Lee. The project is delayed until 2007.
King resides in Bangor, Maine with Tabitha, his wife. The couple spend their winters in Sarasota, Florida in an oceanfront mansion. He has three children: Naomi Rachael, Joe Hill, and Owen Phillip, who are all grown. He also has grandchildren. Owen recently published a collection of stories, We're All in This Together: A Novella and Stories. | |
