Sting, whose real name is Gordon Sumner, is a British musician and sometimes actor who has had a successful solo career since being the lead singer and bassist for band The Police.
Sting is the oldest of four children; he has one brother, Philip, and two sisters, Angela and Anita. He was raised Roman Catholic. After he dropped out of college, Sting worked construction and attended Northern Counties Teachers' Training College; he than got a teaching position at St. Paul's First School. He always carried his love for music with him, taking gigs, performing evenings and weekends during college and teaching.
Sting earned his nickname while performing in a black and yellow jersey with the Phoenix Jazzmen. The band leader, Gordon Solomon, commented that the shirt made him look like a bumblebee -- thus, they began calling him "Sting."
Band, The Police, was formed in London when Sting joined Steward Copeland and Henry Padovani. Their several albums won six Grammy Awards in the early 80s. The Police's final album, Synchronicity, was released in 1983.
Sting's solo career began in the early 1980s with versions of "Roxanne" and "Message in a Bottle." His first single, "Spread a Little Happiness" was released in 1982.
Sting reached the pinnacle of success in 1994 when he, Bryan Adams, and Rod Stewart performed "All For Love" for the The Three Musketeers. The song topped U.S. Charts for five weeks. In February, he won two Grammy Awards and was nominated for three more. That November, he released a greatest-hits compilation, Fields of Gold: The Best of Sting, which was certified Double Platinum.
In 2002, Sting won a Golden Globe and was nominated for another Academy Award for "Until. . ." from Kate & Leopold. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of fame that year.
More recently, Sting has been involved in Live Aid. He strongly supports environmental causes and humanitarian movements. He founded the Rain Forest Foundation with long-time girlfriend, Trudie Styler, and Indian leader, Raoni Metuktire.
Sting married Frances Tomelty on May 1976; they had two children, Joseph (1976) and Fuchsia Catherine (1982), and divorced in 1984. He then married Trudie Styler in 1992; they have four children: Bridget (1984), Jake (1985), Eliot "Coco" (1990), and Giacomo (1995).
Sting owns six homes six homes around the world, including London, New York City, and Malibu, California. He currently resides in Tuscany, Italy.
In October 2006 Sting's will release his next album, Songs from the Labyrinth.
