Tim Robbins is an American actor, screenwriter, director, and producer.

Robbins was raised in a liberal Roman Catholic family. He began acting at the age of twelve when he joined Theater for the New City. After high school graduation, Robbins founded the Actors' Gang, a theater group in Los Angeles, and began taking small roles in films. His breakthrough role was "Nuke" in Bull Durham. His role in The Player (1992) earned him critical acclaim. Another successful role was in The Shawshank Redemption, which he starred in alongside Morgan Freeman.

Robbins is known for writting, producing, and directing films with political messages such as Dead Man Walking, a capital punishment saga, which earned him a directorial Oscar nomination.

More recently, Robbins has been credited for his work in Mystic River, for which he received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In 2005 he starred in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, and made an appearance in Zathura. He directed 1984, George Orwell's novel, for Actors' Gang in early 2006.
