Paramount Drops Missle on Cruise!Tom Cruise is one of the busiest and highest paid actors in America, and quite possibly the craziest. He believes in space aliens, scientology and making a fool of himself during televised interviews.
His career started in 1983 with his comedy role in Risky Business. However, his role in Top Gun made him a box office success. Later movies including Rain Man (1988) with Dustin Hoffman, The Color of Money (1986), A Few Good Men (1992), Jerry Maguire (1996) and the Mission: Impossible movie series further built his reputation. His more recent films include Magnolia (1999), Vanilla Sky (2001), Minority Report (2002) and War of the Worlds (2005).
Paramount Pictures severed its 14-year relationship with Cruise in the summer of 2006. Sumner Redstone, chairman of Viacom Inc., which owns Paramount Pictures, said it was because "his recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount." Before the acrimonious separation, the studio was reportedly paying Cruise/Wagner Productions $10 million a year to develop new projects. Despite this, Cruise was never under contract to Paramount as an actor. Cruise/Wagner Productions is managed by Cruise's business partner, Paula Wagner.
Cruise has been married twice: first to Mimi Rogers from 1987 until 1990, then to Nicole Kidman in 1990 after they met while filming Days of Thunder (1990). The couple appeared together in Eyes Wide Shut in 1999. He and Kidman adopted two children. During this time there was speculation about Cruise's sexuality, with rumors that he was gay. Porn star Chad Slater, allegedly told Acustar magazine that he had an affair with Cruise. Cruise denied this and filed a lawsuit contesting the allegation.
He is a member of the Church of Scientology, which has proven to be a controversial topic for Cruise. In 2005, Cruise began campaigning on behalf of the Church of Scientology before politicians and government officials.
Cruise proposed to girlfriend Katie Holmes on the Eiffel Tower during a press-peek of their romance. Holmes converted her religious affiliation from Roman Catholicism to Scientology. People Magazine reported in October, 2005 that Holmes was pregnant. It is Holmes' first child, and Cruise's third. Cruise also has two adopted children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman: Connor Anthony (January 1995) and Isabella Jane (December 1992). | |
