Tom Hanks is most largely known for his unique and inspirational characters that range from the simple Forrest Gump to a commander in Apollo 13.
Hanks came from working class family. His father, Amos Mefford Hanks, was a Southern cook; his mother, Janet Merilyn Frager, was hospital worker. He spent his childhood in Sturgis, Michigan and Oakland, California. After high school, Hanks moved to Chabot College then transfered to California State University's theater program.
His "nice-guy" appeal makes him perfect for roles like that of the romatic in Sleepless in Seattle. Most of his films were comedies in the early part of his career. More recently he has alternated between comedy and drama. Exceptionally talented at both, he is one of the most sought-after leading men in Hollywood. For two recent films his salary was $20 million each.
Hanks has won Academy Awards for Best Actor for his roles in Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994), and was the youngest recipient of the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award on June 12, 2002.
Hanks is married to Rita Wilson. They have two children. Previously, he was married to Samantha Lewes from 1978 to 1987. He has two children from this marriage as well.
He has supported many Democrates during the last few elections openly calls himself a liberal.
