Diva Vanishes Gospel Career With Cocaine Addiction
Houston is one of America's largest 1980's and 1990's pop artists.
Houston is the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston. At the age of 11 she began performing as a soloist in a gospel choir at a Baptist church in New Jersey. She also attended catholic high school.
She began a modeling career for various magazines in her teens. She was noticed, and then signed by Arista records in 1993. Houston's first album was self-titled and released in 1985. It's successful singles "You Give Good Love" and "Saving All My Love For You" carried the album straight to the top with hit numbers 1 and 3. The songs also saw Houston on top charts in the UK and all over the world. The album was a Grammy winner.
Her second album Whitney, was released in 1987. The hit single "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" (Who Loves Me)," hit tops of the charts around the world and boosted the album sales. The album was the first by a female artist to debut at number one on US charts. Other album hits include "So Emotional" and "Where do Broken Hearts Go."
Throughout the 1990's Houston continued to peak charts and sell millions of records. Houston also appeared in "The Bodyguard" with Kevin Costner and recorded six songs for the soundtrack album, including a highly acclaimed and powerful version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You." This album went on to sell 17 million copies in the U.S. alone, and the best selling soundtrack of all time. In 1996 she co-starred with Denzel Washington in "The Preacher's Wife." This soundtrack was a Gospel dominated album that sold poorly compared to her other releases.
In 2000 Houston's public image became tarnished do to allegations of battling spousal abuse, and rumors of a cocaine addiction. Later, in a 2002 interview, she admitted to abusing cocaine, marijuana, and other drugs. In March of 2004 she entered a drug rehab program and began touring in Europe with Natilie Cole and The Sould Divas Tour. She also toured Asia with a concert of her own. She finished rehab in 2005 and Clive Davis, her music producer, announced that she would be returning to the studio to finish an album before she began rehab.
