He's Got a Big Neocon Job!William Kristol is an American neoconservative commentator who is the editor of The Weekly Standard.
After graduating from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in political science (1979), Kristol taught philosophy and American politics at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. He began working for the government in 1985 as chief of staff to William J. Bennett and then Vice President Dan Quayle.
Kristol was a leader of the Project for the Republic Future, a conservative think tank focused on killing the Clinton health care plan, which was promoted by Hillary Clinton. In 1994, Kristol established the conservative periodical The Weekly Standard, along with neoconservative John Podhoretz and with funding from Rupert Murdoch.
In 1997, Kristol and Robert Kagan founded the Project for the New American Century (PNAC). PNAC made waves with a 1998 letter to President Bill Clinton advocating military action in Iraq, to "protect our vital interests in the Gulf." The organization is frequently credited with providing the philosophical underpinnings for the policies of the George W. Bush administration in the "war on terror."
Kristol is also a member of the conservative think tank the American Enterprise Institute.
Kristol continues to teach courses, including "Intellectual Foundations of American Foreign Policy," at Harvard University as a visiting professor. He can be seen on Fox News as a political commentator.
Kristol is married to Susan Scheinberg and has three children. He currently resides in McLean, Virginia. |
