Picking up where Sharon left-off, Olmert is leader of the dominant political party Kadima (hebrew meaning forward), and passionate about finding peace upon complete disengagement of Israeli occupation from the Gaza and West Bank. Following the disengagement of Israeli occupation from the Gaza and Northern West Bank in September 2005, Olmert has proposed his convergence plan to the media during the 2006 Knesset (Israeli legislative branch) elections. Olmert's "convergence", or otherwise referred to in the west as "realignment", plan is focused on removing all Israeli settlements from Judea and Samaria (West Bank), consolidating them into large groups and relocating the settlements towards the 1967 border, within the next four years. Olmert served the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) as a combat infantry unit officer. After injury he finished duty as a military correspondent for the IDF magazine Bamahane. He graduated from the Hebrew University with degrees in psychology, philosophy, and law. Olmert comes from a politically active family. His parents were often blacklisted for their affiliation with the Herut party, then opposing the mainstream rule of the Mapai party. Olmert was a politically active youth as a member of the Beitar Youth Organization. During the Yom Kippur war, Olmert joined Ariel Sharon's headquarters as a military correspondent. He was first elected to the Knesset at the age of twenty-eight in 1973 and was re-elected seven consecutive times. Olmert has served public office as Minister of Health, Mayor of Jerusalem, Minister responsible for Israel Lands Administration, Minister of Industry Trade and Labor, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Israel. Olmert is married to Aliza; they have four biological children and an adopted daughter.
