Muammar Abu Minyar al-Qaddafi has been the leader of Libya since 1969. Although he holds no formal office, Qaddafi has been given honorific "Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution."

Qaddafi was born in 1942, the youngest of a nomadic Bedouin family. He attended a religious school for his primary education and the attended the Sebha preparatory school in Fezzan. Inspired by Gamal Abdel Nasser, the ruler of Egypt, he and a group of friends for school formed the core of a militant revolutionary group that took control of the country. He was eventually expelled from Sebha for his revolutionary political views and activism.

After law school, he entered the Military Academy in Benghazi in 1963. This is where he and a group of militants organized a secret group that worked to overthrow the Libyan monarchy. He graduated in 1965 and went to Britain for training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Qaddafi staged a coup d\etat against former Libyan ruler, King Idris I, while her was away for medical treatment On September 1, 1969. His nephew, Prince Sayyid Hasan ar-Rida al-Mahdi as-Sanussi, was appointed king. However, the Prince complained that that his power was less on Idris's behalf than it had been while he was Crown Prince. Soon after he was disposed of and put under house arrest, and Qaddafi proclaimed the new Libya Arab Republic. He was promoted from captain to colonel and has maintained this rank for thirty-five years. His new regime was based upon Arab nationalism, some welfare state, and "direct, popular democracy," which he calls "Islamic socialism." He supported pan-Islamism, which is a loose union of all Islamic countries.

Qaddafi is a strong supporter of the Palestine Liberation Organization. He worked to increase Libyan influence in states with Islamic population; he supports anti-government ideals in sub-Saharan Africa. He also supports liberation movements, particularly with Muslim groups.

His regime during the 1970s was known for its terrorist activities in Arab and non-Arab countries and by the 1980s was known as the main financier of international terrorism including the "Black September Movement" which encouraged the Munich massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was accused for being responsible for the control of the 1986 Berlin discotheque bombing that killed three people and wounded over 200, most of which were US servicemen.

Libya's involvement with terrorism was confirmed in 1987 when a merchant vessel, destined for the IRA, was intercepted and full of arms and explosives. British intelligence that more Libyan arms shipment had passed through the IRA.

During the 1990s Libya endured economic sanctions and isolation from diplomatic relations as a result of Qaddafi's reluctance to allow the extradition to the united States of Britain of the two Libyan who were accused of putting a bomb on a Pan Am Flight over Scotland. He eventually agreed to hand over the two accused to the Netherlands for a Scottish Law trail. In August 2003, libya finally accepted responsibility for the bombing. He compensated up to $10 million dollars to the families of the 270 victims.

More recently, Qaddafi has emerged as a popular African leader. He is a prominent figure in the Organization of African Unity, the African Union, and is seen by many African's as a humanitarian who gives money to sub-Saharan states. He has also work to improve his image in the West. Prior to September 11, 2001, Libya pledged commitment to fighting Al-Qaida and offered an open international weapons inspection. There are various speculations to Qaddafi's change in behavior. Some believe that Libya became less wealthy when oil prices significantly dropped in the 1990s and Qaddafi has needed foreign aid more than before. Another reason is that Western reactions have favored him to change his politics. Also, many of his initial ideas didn't follow through: there was never a Arab unity and his revolutionary organizations never achieved their goals.

In 2004 Tony Blair was one of the first western leaders in several decades to visit Libya to meet Qaddafi. Blair praised his recent acts and asked Libya to for support in the War on Terrorism. As of 2006, the US Stated Department announced that it would restore diplomatic relations with the country and be removed for the list of nations that support terrorism.

Qaddafi has eight children, seven of which are sons. His personal bodyguard is a beautiful African woman and martial arts expert, trained in weaponry.
