Nancy Pelosi is the 60th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. She is a democrat, the first woman and the first Italian-American to lead a political party in either house of Congress. Pelosi has represented the 8th District of California since 1987.

Nancy Patricia D'Alesandro Pelosi was born in Baltimore, Maryland and became interested in politics at a young age. Her father, Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr., was a U.S. Congressman from Maryland and Mayor of Baltimore. She married her college boyfriend, and moved to his hometown, San Francisco. Once her five children were raised, Pelosi became involved in politics, eventually becoming the Democratic chairwoman for Northern California. The Pelosi family has a net worth of over $25 million, mainly in investments and shares in publicly traded companies like Microsoft and Amazon.com. She is the wealthiest member of Congress.

Pelosi was elected to a full term, succeeding Sala Burton in 1988 and has been reelected eight times, with more than a 70% vote. In the House, Pelosi has served on the Appropriation and Intelligence Committees, and was the ranking Democrat on the Intelligence Committee for two years.

Pelosi is an outspoken opponent of the Bush Administration's dealings with the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She is against the War in Iraq, and introduced an amendment to the FY 2006 Defense Appropriations bill calling on Bush to specify a strategy for a successful outcome in Iraq, including a timeline for a safe withdrawal of American troops.

Pelosi's agenda for the Democrat's includes increasing minimum wage, ethics reform, federal power to negotiate prescription medicine for Medicare recipients, increased federal support of stem cell research, banning gifts from lobbyists and cutting back travel paid for by private interests.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), speaking before the vote on health care reform. USA Today reported in the story "Health care victory for Obama in House" on March 21, 2010:

"The House delivered Sunday night on President Obama's top priority, a historic restructuring of the nation's health care system that has eluded his predecessors for more than a century.

The 219-212 House vote, coming after a tumultuous day of protests and rancorous debate, paves the way for Obama to sign the major portion of his 10-year, $940 billion plan early this week. The House was to vote later Sunday on a package of changes and send it to the Senate for final passage.

The vote assured that about 32 million Americans will gain health insurance coverage and millions more will win protections against losing theirs. The legislation will raise taxes, largely on the wealthy, and reduce future Medicare spending by about $500 billion.

"This legislation will lead to healthier lives," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said in the final floor speech before the vote. "This is an American proposal that honors the traditions of our country."

However, Republican House members all disagreed by voting unanimously against the bill. From The Los Angeles Times: "This trillion-dollar tragedy is just bad medicine," Rep. Lee Terry (R-Neb.) said."
