Mister 911!Rudolph Giuliani was the 107th mayor of New York City, serving from 1994 to 2001.
Giuliani is a true New Yorker: born in New York, a graduate of Manhattan College and New York University Law School. He came from a family of Italian immigrants.
He joined the U.S Attorney's office, and soon became the U.S. Attorney for New York in 1983. Subsequently, he was appointed the third ranking official in the U.S. Department of Justice, arguing successfully on behalf of the U.S. government that there was "no political repression" in Haiti under President Jean-Claude Duvalier.
In 1989 he ran as the Republican candidate for mayor of New York City, losing to Democrat David Dinkins. He later defeated Dinkins in the election of 1993. He became known as a law-and-order major who strongly supported the police force and worked to clean subways and public spaces like Times Square. He was elected again in 1997.
Giuliani was expected to run for U.S. Senate in 2000, but a diagnosis of prostate cancer caused him to withdraw. The seat was then won by Hillary Clinton. During the same year he separated from his wife, Donna Hanover, admitting to an affair with another woman. He was unable to run for mayor again in 2001 because of term limits, thus Michael Bloomberg succeeded him as mayor in 2002.
He was highly praised for his leadership after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. But he has been both criticized and ridiculed for continuing to evoke the difficult days of late 2001 for political advantage.
Giuliani ran for the Republican party nomination in the 2008 presidential election. | |
