Stephen Harper is currently the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada, and leader of the conservative party.
Harper grew up the eldest of three brothers in Toronto, Canada and graduated top of his high school class. He became involved in politics while in high school when he was a member of the Young Liberal's Club. His political allegiance changed because he was opposed to the Trudeau government's National Energy program, which he thought was harming Alberta\s energy industry.
Since 2002, Harper has been the Member of Parliament for the riding of Calgary Southwest in Alberta. Perviously, from 1993 to 1997, he served as the Member of Parliament for Calgary West. The Canadian protocol deems him "The Right Honorable," as Prime Minister.
Harper is one of the founding members of the Reform Party, which ended his role as head of the National Citizens Coalition. He became leader of the Canadian Alliance after ousting the leader Stockwell Day in 2002. He reached an agreement with Peter Mackay, a progressive conservative, to merge the Canadian Alliance with the Progressive Conservative Party to form the Conservative Party of Canada. He was elected the first leader of the new party in March, 2004.
He married Laureen Tesky in 1993; the couple have two children: Benjamin (1996) and Rachel (1999). | |

David Couke Toronto, ON Canada | Posted at 1:04am on Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007 | Thanks for saving our Country! I was more worried than ever after all those Liberal crooks kept winning time and time again. I had lost almost all pride in my Country because of it and I do invest my time in my Countries service on a regular basis as I should and the no brainer choice of voting when the time comes to do so. The 3 biggest cities in Canada did't even contribute one Conservative member to our government running us today. How pathetic is that! Good job Toronto...Center of your own universe... Vancouver, you should know better and Montreal, what can say about you? Real Canadians who care about good/smart government and relize that this can be achieved through simple invested interest in it and a little reasoning along with voting, were the ones that saw and really listened to you. We may have only been 30% of Canadian voters then but I assure you we are at least more than that now. I am ashamed more than you know about only being a third of the Country but not more than you are I'm sure. We are starting to get it though I think now that the long time Liberal Government susidized National news agency, the CBC, has no chioce but to pay attention to you and you've been getting your message across with every blip of news they grudgingly afford you. Real Canadians would like to thank you for your many years of service to this great Country, I'm glad your honest most of all, not only just for you but for all of us too. Honesty, integrity and charity are the most important traits a Prime Minister can and should have and not only do you have them all in abundance but you also want it more for us than for yourself! That is what makes you the great Leader you are! Remember that always.
Thanks again.
