Ted Kennedy was the youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, both of whom were assassinated. He was the father of Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI).
Kennedy was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May 2008. He died just before midnight on August 25, 2009 at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife Victoria Reggis Kennedy and their five children -- Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick Kennedy, and Curran and Caroline Raclin.
One of the most senior members of the Senate, Kennedy was known for his liberal perspectives and strong support for education and health care. He was a major player in writing the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
Senator Kennedy was chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Previously he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and served on that committee for many years. He also served on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Congressional Joint Economic Committee. He was a leader of the Congressional Friends of Ireland and helped lead the way toward peace on that island.
Kennedy's personal life was long a topic of interest. His reputation was tarnished by tales of alcoholism and womanizing. In 1969 he was involved in a car accident involving Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy was the driver and was convicted of leaving the scene of an accident. Kopechne was found drowned on Chappaquiddick Island, part of Martha's Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts. Kennedy's sentence, however, was suspended. The Joyce Carol Oates Novel, Black Water is an account, though fictionalized, of these events.
In 1980, Kennedy decided to run for the Democratic presidential nomination, launching a campaign against President Jimmy Carter. He started with much support, but his bid was ultimately unsuccessful. He delivered a charismatic speech at the 1980 Democratic party convention in New York City. Soon after he bowed out of the race.
