Spare the Rod, Spoil the Child!Dr. James Clayton Dobson is the founder and chairman of Focus on the Family, a nonprofit evangelical organization and influential political pressure group which promotes conservative Christian values. While Dobson is a child psychologist with no formal theological training, many consider him the most influential evangelical leader in America.
Founded in 1977 and based in Colorado Springs, Focus on the Family seeks to preserve traditional values and the institution of the family. The organization produces internationally syndicated radio programs hosted by Dobson, which can be heard on over 3,000 radio stations worldwide. Dobson also appears on about 60 US television stations each day. Each year, Focus on the Family receives about $140 million in donations.
Before Focus on the Family, Dobson was a Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine for fourteen years; he spent seventeen years at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles in the Child Development and Medical Genetics Divisions. He is a licensed psychologist in California.
He first earned a reputation through his publication, Dare to Discipline, which argues for spanking children who defy their parents. In all, Dobson has written 36 books. He continues his work as a writer through a weekly publication, Focus on the Family, which is distributed at Sunday church services.
Dobson is an outspoken opponent of the gay rights movement. In the book Marriage Under Fire: Why We Must Win This Battle, Dobson suggests that the falling marriage rates are due to same-sex relationships condoned by political leaders. He writes that "there is no issue today that is more significant to our culture than the defense of the family. Not even the war on terror eclipses it."
A promoter of patriarchal marriage, Dobson believes men have the divine right to lead their families, and women have the obligation to submit to their authority.
Dobson and his wife Shirley live in Colorado Springs and have two grown children: Danae and Ryan. Ryan is a public speaker on issues relating to youth and pro-life. | |

Vaz deFrance Woonsocket RI | Posted at 12:22am on Wednesday, October 10th, 2007 | This is a little tricky, in that Dr. Dobson does not say that he is an M.D. in his bio, but he worked for many years at the Univeristy of Southern California School of Medicine and is listed in Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. Sounds like a medical doctor to me!
